Obituary for Demosthenes Ortega Catubig

Demosthenes, better known as “Thenes,” was born on February 2, 1952, in Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte Philippines. He is a brother to 11 siblings. A devoted husband to his best friend and the love of his life Joyce, raising two beautiful children Aaron and Iris. He is also a nurturing grandfather to his one and only granddaughter Kyla Star. In 1984, he left the Philippines to the United States along with his son to reunite with his loving wife and to find a better future for his family. Thenes was preceded in death by his father Agapito Catubig and three siblings Wilfreda, Reynado, and Corazon. He lived with his loving family in Sacramento until he peacefully returned to the Lord on September 27, 2018.

In his young adult life, he made sure that education was a priority. Thenes attended San Stanislao Kostka High School. Followed by Silliman University where he joined a fraternity called The Gamma Kappa PHI in 1972. A couple years later, he moved to Andres Bonifacio University and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1981. As a result, he worked as a student (Hydrographic Engineering Tech.) from 1979-1981 and an Irrigation engineer from 1982-1983 in the National Irrigation Administration - Philippines. He immigrated to the United States and worked as a Design Engineer from 1984-2001. Additionally, in 1994, he attended Consumes River College in Sacramento, CA to proactively keep abreast of the innovations in civil engineering. In August 2018, Thenes retired from the Sacramento County Water Resources after working there for 17 years. He was dedicated to his career and colleagues – he truly loved his job.

He worked hard his whole life, all while remaining humble and always putting his family above everything else. He put smiles on everyone’s face with his kind words and sense of humor. A man devoted to his Faith, selfless and fair. He is loved and respected by all that knew him. Many will miss him dearly and are thankful for our time together.
