Obituary for Ray Howard Hilliard

Ray Howard Hilliard was born on March 19, 1949 in the Central District of Seattle, Washington. He was the youngest child of Lamar and Argola (Smith) Hilliard.

Ray spent his childhood attending Seattle Public Schools. When he was not visiting his aunts and uncles, he was on his bike delivering newspapers. Ray graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1967, and enrolled at Seattle Central Community College. He was a student in the Educational Opportunity Program at the University of Washington
and in 1973 earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism.

In 1975, Ray moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he met Antonia (Toni) Monteiro, and they were married on October 22, 1983. To this union, two daughters were born, Adriana Rochelle and Alyssa Janelle.

Ray’s professional career was incredibly fulfilling. He spent time with the San Francisco Mission Rebels organizing youth programs, and was a management trainee at Montgomery Ward. He amassed more than 30 years of experience in IT. He was employed and contributed time with Sprint and Gap Inc. as a Systems Analyst in Procurement and Facilities. In addition, he was a Project Manager. During his years of employment with both companies Ray met many colleagues whom he became friends with and developed life-long relationships.

A man of quiet faith and few words, Ray preferred to allow the way he lived his life to speak as his testimony. He liked to laugh, faced challenges without complaint, and was fiercely protective of those he loved.

Ray maintained a special relationship with his family, both immediate and extended. He was especially close to his nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. He traveled the world with his wife, however the most important trips centered around the
bi-yearly Hilliard Family Reunion in Weed, CA. For more than 40 years, Ray consistently made breakfast at the reunion with a beloved cousin, Duane Rankin.

An avid sports fan, Ray maintained a keen interest in Washington Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. He also enjoyed nature television programming, and feeding birds in the family backyard, which he designed.

Surrounded by his family in prayer, Ray went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 24th. His parents and brother, Joseph Hilliard, Sr. preceded him in death. Ray is survived by his wife of 34 years, Toni; two daughters, Adriana and Alyssa; three brothers, Barney (Norberta), Bill (Dorothy), and Hartsel; in-law siblings Juana, Avelino and Zulmira Monteiro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends who he loved dearly.
