Apr 8, 1922 - Feb 3, 2012
Young Shew Lee (aka Shew Lim) passed away peacefully on February 3, 2012, at the age of 89, just a couple of months short of his 90th birthday. He was born April 8, 1922 in Long Benn Village, Toisan, Guangdong Province, China to Lee Yin Mow (aka Ho Lim) and (Lee) Gee Shee. At the age of 17, he emigrated to the United States to join his father, living in various areas of California (San Francisco, Los Angeles) before settling in the Sacramento Valley region. He returned to Hong Kong to marry Tam Kwan Ying (aka Connie Lee) of Toisan City in 1947. In 1951, she joined him to begin life and start a family in Olivehurst, California (Marysville-Yuba City area). Although there were forebearers in both families who came to the United States, they would be among the first to settle here.
Mr. Lee’s early life included work as an agricultural laborer and in a laundry; his settled profession was in the grocery business. He worked in and had partnerships in various markets in Yuba City, Olivehurst, and Sacramento, as well as worked in a supermarket chain (Farmer’s Market), before serving as the owner-operator of Lee’s Market (Olivehurst) from 1969 to his retirement in 1978.
Despite little formal schooling in China, limited English language skills, and other challenges to first-generation immigrants, he was self-reliant, independent, and worked hard in his adopted country. Among his personal interests were gardening, freshwater fishing, carpentry and woodwork, framing prints, and mah jong. He single-handedly built three houses and took a deep sense of pride in his workmanship.
Predeceased by his wife Connie in 2000, he relocated to Sacramento in 2002. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Judy Lee (James S. Koga) of Riverside, CA, Peter Lee (Joan) and Ron Lee (Geri), both of Sacramento, CA; and his five grandchildren and their spouses, Christine M. Lee (Shekhar Khedekar), Jonathan D. Lee, Jameson L. Koga (Elizabeth), Kelvin T. Lee, and Alice J.L. Koga.
Viewing and funeral services will take place at Harry A. Nauman & Son, 4041 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95822.
