William (“Bill”) George Dau of Sacramento, passed away peacefully at the age of 92. The second of five children born to Otto and Naomi Dau and a native of Nebraska, he graduated from Yutan High School in 1947.
Following graduation, Bill began his banking career at the Bank of Yutan, later working for First Western Bank and Lloyds Bank. Always a hard worker, Bill first held a position as a teller and after a move to California in the early 1950’s was promoted to loan officer. In the early eighties he switched industries and worked for Farmers Insurance as a licensed independent agent until his retirement in 1992.
Bill was an extremely talented and accomplished woodworker, building things for his family home such as a china cabinet, sewing machine cabinet, bedroom furniture, etc. His many projects can also be found in his children’s homes. After Bill retired, he walked into Mr. Moulding to buy supplies to replace baseboards in their home. After a conversation with the owner, he was hired to assist customers in the store. Bill built some sample items such as fireplace mantles to show customers how the moulding products could be used. Customers started asking if the company built custom products, which they did not. And there is where Bill’s lifelong hobby turned into a new job in retirement. He began building meticulously crafted custom fireplace mantles for clients all over the Sacramento area.
Bill was a beloved and loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a kind and caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Bill was an avid reader, enjoyed walking for fitness, always appreciated a good joke or pun, and loved a good Polka.
Preceded in death by his brother, James Dau and sisters, Mary Lou Harnden and Beverly Baker. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis; daughter, Linda Betts (David); son, Roger Dau (Shawna); 2 granddaughters, Paris and Eden Stream-Dau and brother Jack Dau.
