Walter Schoen of Sacramento died on Thursday, March 27 at the age of 89. A World War II veteran, he was born and raised in Hawaii where he and his three brothers witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Soon thereafter he joined the Navy and after serving in the South Pacific, he spent the remainder of the war in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was in Officer Candidate School. After attending the University of Pennsylvania and Swarthmore College as part of his Naval assignment, he completed his college career at Drexel University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by Campbell’s Soup Company where he designed machinery for the manufacture of products for Campbell’s, Swanson Frozen Foods, and Godiva Chocolates. He was later employed by the Van de Kamp’s Sea Food Company and lived in Pago Pago, American Samoa. A devout Catholic, he was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Walter is survived by Isabel Schoen, his wife of 37 years and three children: Walter Schoen Junior of Richmond, Virginia; Kathy Klockenthoer and Barbara Cooke of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; a stepdaughter, Diane Lewis of Sacramento, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday April 3rd at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA. Visitation held Wednesday April 2nd at 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Vigil at 6:00 PM at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Knights of Columbus: Monsignor Raymond Renwald, P.O. Box 456, Elk Grove, CA 95759.
