Virginia Ellen Smith

Nov 3, 1915 - May 1, 2011

Born November 3, 1915, in Cynthiana, Indiana, to Iva Dell (Overton) and Amos Lancelot Turner. She died May 1, 2011, age 95, after a short illness. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Cameron, and sisters Beulah, Pauline, and Genevieve. She is survived by her loving brother Amos Turner, children Nancy Welliver (Jim) and Andrew Smith (Judith), and her adoring granddaughters Rebeckah Long (Eric) and Sarah Smith. Virginia’s calling in a life was to be a volunteer. Beginning in WWII, until the 1960s, she was a civilian volunteer at the Sacramento Filter Center where she plotted aircraft reported by field spotters. In the late 60s and 70s, with her husband Cameron, she devoted many hours and miles to being an adult sponsor of Sing Out Sacramento, a local Up With People group involving hundreds of area teenagers. She also spent many years as a volunteer at Call 3 for Action, serving Sacramento as a true problem solver. In addition to all these activities, she dedicated more than 50 years of her life to serving the needs of Sutter Hospitals as an Auxiliary member and amassed more volunteer hours than any other person. Virginia worked the information desks at Sutter General and Sutter Memorial delivering patient mail, flowers, and giving directions, as the Auxiliary’s office manager, and spent the final years of her service at the Sutter’s Cancer Center help desk until finally retiring at the age of 92. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Virginia’s name to the ASPCA or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at the Lind Brothers’ Funeral Home, 4221 Manzanita Avenue, Carmichael, 95608: May 7 2011 2:00PM
