Tyke Day McConnell

Born Charles Day McConnell on April 29, 1944, in Sacramento, California, to the late Virginia and Leonard McConnell. Tyke, as he was known to family and friends, passed away at the age of 73 on April 10, 2018. Tyke was the loving husband of Nelda and was preceded in death by his son Keith and granddaughter Linda (McConnell) Doud. Tyke is survived by his sons Troy and Wade (Jennifer); brothers Vern (Nancy) and Bruce Drews (Chris); grandchildren Megan, Jack, and Ben; grandson-in-law Jerry Doud; and great-grandson, Tyson Doud. Tyke attended El Camino High School and American River Community College. Beginning in high school, Tyke worked at Bel Air Market and then had a long career driving for Crystal Dairy, Knudsen, Lucky, and Albertsons until retiring in 2002. Tyke had a passion and talent for photography and flying, especially his 47′ Beechcraft Bonanza V-35 airplane. He adored driving his many prized Corvettes, watching his beloved 49ers, and enjoying large bowls of ice cream. Tyke was a gentle giant who loved spending time with family and lit up whenever his grandchildren came into the room. He was loved by many for his kind heart, his sense of humor, and for always finding the good in everyone he met. The family of Tyke gives special thanks to lifetime friends Bill, Dave, Fred, John, Nick, Ron, and Steve for their friendship and support as well as the medical staff at Kaiser for their compassion and excellent care. Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Friday, April 20 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Ln, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tyke’s memory to the American Heart Association, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.
