Obituary

Susan Jane Croft died very peacefully at about 4:00pm March 31, 2015, the afternoon sunlight shining into her living room in Carmichael, California. Susan withstood multiple excruciating health problems with courage and strength for many years. Her body finally relented to advanced lung cancer after unknowingly living with it for months, trudging onward with characteristic humor, kindness, sarcasm, wit and undying adoration for her beloved Maggie. Susan moved to Carmichael in 1995 after teaching in and enjoying the Bay Area for over three decades. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC Berkeley in 1965 and embarked on a successful career at the elementary level primarily in the Contra Costa Unified School District until moving to Carmichael. “Ms. Croft” touched thousands of lives across many grade levels, although she seemed to settle into her sweet spot with 4th graders for the last substantial segment of her tenure, giving her students everything she had: guidance, instruction, love, humor and compassion. She is survived by her devoted sister, Diane Ramsey (Fair Oaks), who fiercely looked out for her baby sister for years; dear friends Nancy Schiller (Richmond) and Rhonda Kingman (San Francisco); nephew Ben Ramsey (Janesville); nieces Samantha Ramsey (San Lorenzo), Lisa Dion (Brookings, OR), and Jennifer Ramsey (Davis); grandnieces Emma McCapes (Berkeley) and Jacqueline Dion (Portland, OR); and grandnephews Joseph Dion (Eugene, OR), Dylan McCapes (Berkeley), Brandon McCapes (NYC) and Tyler Ramsey Austin (San Francisco). Both parents, Mary Jane and Merion Wilford (“Bill”) Croft (Orangevale), predeceased Susan in the fall of 2002. Donations can be made in her name to Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary http://www.happytails.org and/or the Humane Society of the United States http://www.humanesociety.org. Go Giants! Beat Stanford. And rest in pain-free peace, Aunt Susie.
