Sadao “Sam” Nagao was born in Sacramento on April 29, 1919. He was the oldest son of Teiji and Riki (Sakiyama) Nagao. He spent his formative years in what is today Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Sadao, also known to some as Sam, has lived in Arvin, Bakersfield, Elk Grove, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Stockton.
During the Second World War, he was interned at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds; then he was sent to the Camp in Rohwer, Arkansas; and finally at Tule Lake Camp in Modoc County, California. As a devoted and loving husband and father, Sam worked at all types of employment to support and provide for the family. He retired in 1984 from the California Highway Patrol Academy in Yolo County.
Sam peacefully passed away in Elk Grove on October 24, 2015. He is survived by his nuclear family members: wife Misao “Helena” (Iwahashi) of Elk Grove, daughter Noreen Mayumi Nagao of Sacramento, and son Norris Sadato Nagao of San Diego.
A private service was held at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento on October 31, 2015.
