Richard Nelmes Smith

Richard (Dick) Nelmes Smith, 86, of Sacramento passed away on February 5, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento.
Dick was born on July 22, 1929 to Wm. Nelmes and Ethel Smith in Sacramento. In 1941 the family moved to Ukiah, California. He graduated from Ukiah High in 1947. After spending three years at UC Berkeley studying Chemistry, he served in the Air Force for four years and during this time he took extension courses from a variety of universities. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Oregon State University(OSC), graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In 1976 Dick completed a second bachelor’s degree in Economics from Cal State, Sacramento. Dick’s lifelong love of education is evident in his generous support of countless engineering students at OSU, in the Transportation and Civil Engineering Department.
On April 3, 1965 Dick married Lieselotte (Lilo) Leonard of Osnabruck, Germany.
Dick worked as a civil engineer for CalTrans for a total of 50 years, the last 20 years as an expert witness. Dick’s numerous interests were traveling (including a year working in Saudi Arabia), attending the opera, reading and studying the life of Winston Churchill.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife and parents. He is survived by his sister Nelcyne, brother-in-law Dwayne “Red” Wright and their children Luayne, Sheri (Jon), Glenn (Jane), Laurette and Verba (Bob). At his request, no services are planned. He will be interned at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento beside his wife.
