Passed away November 9, 2019 at home with family by his side. Beloved husband of Ann Hertel for 53 happy years starting with the proposal on bank of the Yukon River. Cherished father of Ronald Hertel (wife Kerrie Hertel) and Sara Hawley (husband Dana Hawley). Adoring grandfather of Sean Hertel, Aisley Hertel, Emmi Hawley, Max Hawley and Anna Hawley.
Graduate of C. K. McClatchy High School 1956 and UC Berkeley School of Engineering 1961 with Highest Honors and Phi Beta Kappa. Rowed on the Varsity Cal Crew and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Graduate of Stanford Sloan Business School 1977.
Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy Seabees assigned to construction projects on Midway Island, the Aleutians, and in Okinawa. Company Commander special skills company and Commander headquarter’s company. Decorated expert pistol.
Worked with his father, Ray Hertel, Sr, at Hertel Construction Co building bridges in Northern California and Nevada 1963 – 1969. President of Hertel Construction Co 1969 – 2010. Reading, flying, skiing, hiking, fly fishing and the grandchildren were his passions. Known for his constant smile, strong work ethic and selfless devotion to his family.
