Pun Fai (Gary) Yuen, 87, of Sacramento, California, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of August 19, 2022, surrounded by family.
He was born to parents Yu Kuen Yuen and Shut Kwai (Lui) Yuen, on February 13, 1935, in Hong Kong. Gary graduated from Westminster College in 1956 and the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1960.
He was the Chief Surgical Resident at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, an Aviation Medical Examiner, a Commander in the U.S. Public Health Services, and a Board Certified Physician and Surgeon for several decades with a focus on open heart surgery later in his career. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and the California Medical Association.
Gary married Kathy in 1962, who survives him. He is also survived by three sons (Jeff, Mike, David) and four grandchildren (Jeremy, Justin, Jennifer, Jake) as well as his sister Judy, and daughters-in-law Lynnette and Donna. He is predeceased by his parents, three brothers, and seven sisters.
Gary was known for his laughter, smile, and storytelling. He was a life-long tennis player, an avid gardener, and enthusiastic stock investor. He also enjoyed hiking and music. Two of his favorite songs were “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver and “Rhinestone Cowboy” by Glen Campbell. Later in life he participated in weekly yoga classes. Finally, he always appreciated a nice glass of red wine and loved to travel the world with a special affinity for Hawaii.
The wake will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022, from 3-5 p.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park. A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at 9:30 a.m., also at East Lawn Memorial Park. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the following charities in memory of Pun Fai (Gary) Yuen: The Jimmy V Foundation and American Cancer Society.
