Born Nov. 12, 1916 in Brava, Cape Verde Islands; passed away July 26, 2011 at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by parents John and Juana Santiago and a younger sister, Candida. He was a beloved and loving husband of 60 years to Anna; greatly missed father to devoted daughters Joeana (Bruce Carpenter) and Debbie (Tom Kellner); with a large extended family in Sacramento, the East Coast, and Florida. A resident of Sacramento since 1952; he had a 29 year career with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a true gentleman, a great lover of life, and was always surrounded by family, friends, and pets. As an accomplished gardener, he found the greatest expression of his deep faith, through tilling the soil. He believed deeply in hard work, faith, and honesty. He remained deeply committed and with great pride to his Cape Verdean culture and community. He was also grateful for the opportunities the United States gave to him and was proud to be an American. He loved playing cards with friends, fishing, cooking great meals, playing music, and dancing with the love of his life Anna ‘Maichuchuca’ .
Always quick with a smile, Pedro “Paichuchuca” was happiest surrounded by family, friends, and his beloved pets. His home and heart was always welcoming to everyone. He had a true joy for living.
