Obituary

After 91 years of a full and purposeful life, Osame Hayashi Doi passed away peacefully on May 1, 2016. Born in Salinas, California, Osame was the 6th and youngest child of her family. At the time of WWII, Osame completed her high school education in a Japanese American internment camp (Poston, AZ), where persons of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast were detained by Executive Order 9066. From the internment camp, Osame was selected for a Quaker sponsorship to attend Lankenau School of Nursing in Philadelphia. In the decades that followed, Osame sustained a productive career as a Registered Nurse in both medical and mental health settings. Osame married her beloved husband Arthur Doi in 1949. They were in their 67th year of marriage upon her death. A devoted mother to Kathryn (Howard Ferrier), Susan, and Carol (deceased 1972), Osame was also the proud grandmother and great grandmother of her grandson Andrew Ferrier (Katie), Colin, and Charlotte, and granddaughter Lisa Ferrier (Dan Johnson), Josephine, and Evelyn. Osame was a longstanding and active member of Parkview Presbyterian Church. She was loved for her warmth, humor, and kindness. Noted to be a talented artist and avid gardener, Osame enjoyed many activities including travel, poetry writing, yoga, and singing in the church choir. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday June 26, 2016, 12:30pm, at Parkview Presbyterian Church, 727 T St., Sacramento 95811.
