Mildred Laverne Howard
Jul 24, 1925 - Sep 15, 2016
Mildred Laverne Howard, known as “Dolly” to family and friends, was called home to our Lord at the age of 91 on September 15, 2016 after a brief illness.
Dolly was born on July 24, 1925 in Johnsville, AR to Stella and Owen Lowry. She graduated from Vicks High School in 1943. She met James Foster Howard while working as a typist in Hampton, AR. Love bloomed and after a six-week courtship, they married on July 7, 1945. After the birth of their daughter, Lynda Kaye, they moved to Houston, TX. Their siblings and parents followed them to Houston—their adopted hometown. In 1950, they welcomed a son, James Owen.
A devoted mother, Dolly raised their two children while working in a
variety of occupations from hairstylist to bank teller to real estate agent. Dolly moved their household across the country multiple times as James’ occupation as an iron worker kept the family traveling from one job to the next. From Maryland to Michigan, New York to California, and occasionally back home to Houston, she created a loving home and countless treasured memories everywhere they went.
1964, Dolly and James settled in Sacramento, where she began a career in the clerical field at McClellan Air Force Base. She would continue in civilian government service until her retirement in 1987.
Dolly was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Orangevale for more than 25 years. Her love of God, the Baptist faith and her church community was evident in her years of service teaching Sunday school and cooking for funerals and other church functions. Dolly was blessed with Hendricks, Esther Rios, Rosemary Gupton and Thelma Spurlock.
She was cherished by her family and the tender care she provided and was admired by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for her beauty, grace, tireless work ethic, intelligence and resilience.
Dolly was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sisters Marie Gentry and Louise Gibson and brothers Mason, Billy Joe, Kevin and
Delbert Lowery. She is survived by her adoring husband of 71 years, James, their daughter Lynda Aguilar (Ramon), son James O. Howard (Amy); grandchildren Julie Aguilar Rogado (Geoffrey), Emily Howard, and Max Howard; and great-grandchildren Bradley Carlson, Anthony Rogado and Gillian Rogado.
