Merritt C Van Ostrand
May 19, 1940 - Jul 17, 2019
Merritt Charles Van Ostrand known by family and friends as “Van” or “Charles”. Van was born in Langley, Virginia but called Sacramento, California home. He was passionate about his country and served 28 years with the United States Air Force. He also participated in two tours in the Vietnam War and was a flight sergeant airman on C130 and C5 airplanes. Van retired and was honorably discharged as a Senior Master Sergeant.
Van was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. Survived by his loving wife Ludy, his sister Barbara, and his children; Tom, Tammy, Becky, Linda, Jennifer Lynn, Joy, Jennifer Marie, Sidnie, Noel and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his four legged fur baby Vengy.
Van loved to travel, scuba dive, sky dive and dancing. He also enjoyed building model trains and airplanes. Van had a big heart, was very kind, helpful, caring, funny and loved to make everyone laugh. He also enjoyed telling stories of his time overseas to family and friends. One of his best stories he liked to tell was the fact that he was born prematurely and was so small he slept in a cigar box. Just a simple reminder that it is not how one starts out, it’s how he/she finish.
He will be missed and forever in our hearts.
