Marian Jane Melford Wharton Freilinger
Marian Wharton Freilinger passed away in Camichael, CA September 28, 2013. Marian was born in Biggs, CA June 11, 1913 to George and Salina Melford. Her happy childhood was spent in Biggs on a horse and buggy dairy farm until they obtained a motor vehicle. She graduated from Sacramento High School in 1929. As a homemaker with two young children during World War II she helped her PTA provide an after school and summer playground program while other young mothers worked. After divorce she found employment for twenty three years, first with Montgomery Ward and then with Weinstocks. As a department manager for those companies she opened new stores in Napa, Reno, and Sacramento and then retired in 1978. Her interests then turned to AARP where she worked in her local chapter on catastrophic health care and other legislative issues and then served as Assistant and Associate Director of the California AARP organization. As a retiree she enrolled at American River College and received her AA as the oldest graduate of that year. Marian enjoyed season tickets at the Music Circus for more than fifty years. She enjoyed traveling in her later years and was always an avid reader She is predeceased by husbands Clarence Wharton and William Freilinger and her daughter Sandra Wolfe. She is survived by her daughter Judy Robertson of Tahoe City, California. A graveside service will be held at East Lawn Sierra Hills, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, CA on October 3, 2013. A Memorial Service will be at 2 pm at Arden Christian Church. 4300 Las Cruces Way, Sacramento, CA on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Memorial donations may be made to a Hospice of your choice.
