Luman B. Sutton, 90, died Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. John’s Retirement Village in Woodland, California. He was born January 13, 1927 in the Methodist Parsonage in Gifford, Illinois. Survived by his beloved and devoted wife Gloria who he met in Dixon, Illinois. They first met at the beach on the Rock River in Lowell Park near Dixon. They were married in 1955. Lu was proud of his beloved sons and their families; Dana, his former wife Hae Won, and granddaughter Susan; son Craig, his wife Helen, grandson, Eric, and granddaughters Sonia and Anna. Preceded in death by his son, Grant, and parents Rev. Leonard R. Sutton and Anne Sutton. Also survived by his beloved sister, Ruth Scott, of Baldwin City, Kansas. Luman enlisted in the Army Air Corp Aviation Cadet Program at age 17, and was in basic training at Keesler Field, Mississippi when WWII ended. He served with the Headquarters Squadron of the Far Eastern Air Service Command in the Philippines. After graduation from Illinois Wesleyan in 1951, he was employed by the U.S.F.&G. Insurance Company in Chicago, Illinois and served as an Underwriting Trainee in the Casualty Underwriting Department before being promoted to the branch office in Dixon, Illinois. In 1962, he was promoted to the new office in Sacramento, California. Luman transferred to the San Jose branch in 1983, and retired as a Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager, in 1987. He enjoyed his family and their activities together including camping, Little League, Age Group Swim Team, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Luman’s hobbies included reading, camping, bird watching, gardening and swimming. He was a founding member of the Sacramento Masters Swim Team in 1971 and competed in all venues – Long Course, Short Course, Short Course Meters and Open Water races. He made top times in the local Pacific Masters Association swim meets and top ten times in the United States Masters Swimming Association. The Sutton family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Johns Retirement Village for their thoughtful care of Luman. At his request, no funeral services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sacramento YMCA, 2021 W Street, Sacramento, California 95818.
