SWEET, Louise Celestine

Much-loved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend died peacefully at St. Alphonsus RMC, Boise, ID, Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the age of 96. Louise was born in New England, ND to Emerick and Elizabeth Martin. The family moved to Sacramento when Louise was 5 years old. Louise attended the Catholic Grammar School in Sacramento and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1932. She was active in the choir at St. Francis Catholic Church and worked part time at Sutter Memorial Hospital in the kitchen during her high school years. During brief return to the Montana-North Dakota area (1 year), she attended Glendive HS in Glendive, MT where the family had a farm. She and her brother worked diligently to get the family back to California.

On August 6, 1933 she married the love of her life, Benton Sweet. During WWII they lived in San Francisco, where she worked at a Fashion-Design House. The love of sewing stirred in high school continued through her lifetime. After the war, they returned to the Sacramento area where she and her husband operated a grocery store in Florin, CA. Around 1948 they sold the store and she started working for the California State Transportation Dept. where she worked for nearly 25 years. As a couple they were very active in folk dance and square dance clubs in these early years. From 1954 thru 1974, the family lived on their ranch on Calvine Rd. and after retiring moved in town to Elk Grove.

With daughter, Deanna, she was active in Brownies, Girl Scouts and the Catholic Youth Organizations at Immaculate Conception Church in Sacramento and St. Joseph’s Church in Elk Grove, CA. Her entire life she was active in Bridge Clubs in the Sacramento-Elk Grove area and this continued after her move to Boise, ID in 2003 to live near her daughter, Deanna. After retiring in Elk Grove, she was active at the Elk Grove Senior Center where she made many beautiful dolls. At St. Joseph’s Catholic Church’s Altar Society and Ladies Guild she made many good friends. In 1985 she was even named Woman of the Year for the Dioceses. After her move to Boise, she was still active, joining the Conference of Catholic Women at St. Mark’s Catholic Community Parish, Boise, ID; their Senior Lunch Bunch and the Bridge Group.

Louise was predeceased by her 12 brothers and sisters and husband Benton Sweet.
