Kevin Regan was born on April 21, 1948 and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on May 20, 2009. Kevin fought a long battle with the rare merkel cell carcinoma, but will be remembered for the positive energy he displayed throughout his life and his courage in fighting this disease. He is survived by his wife, Catherine George, his daughter, Kelly Ann Regan, his brother, Brian Thomas Regan, and his sister-in-law, Lynn Barbaria.

Kevin was born in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Florence J. Regan and USAF Capt. William J. Regan. His father died in 1952. His mother, an attorney and professor of law, later married Charles W. Luther, also an attorney and law professor, in 1961. He spent most of his youth in Sacramento and graduated from the University of the Pacific in 1970, and Hastings College of Law School in 1974 where he was recognized for his academic accomplishments, which included his admission to the national Order of the Coif and the Hastings’ Thurston Society. He was a law clerk for the California Supreme Court from 1975 to 1976 and enjoyed a 22 year career as a senior writ attorney with the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento. In addition, he served with the State Attorney General’s office in appellate matters.

He married Nancy Strathman in 1970 and their beloved daughter, Kelly Ann Regan, was born in 1977. Kevin was a devoted father who shared his passions for the outdoors, travel and literature with his daughter, his friends and other family. He married Carol Brown in 1982 and married Catherine George in September 2004 and they resided in East Sacramento until his untimely death.

Kevin was devoted to athletics. He was a runner, hiker, marathon runner and cyclist. He enjoyed a variety of outdoor pursuits, including numerous river running trips down the Grand Canyon, the Rogue River and the Snake River. He traveled to England, Scotland, Switzerland, and Spain and toured by bike in New Zealand, France, Italy and Tasmania.

After retiring from the Court he donated his time and energy to community pursuits related to his love for and commitment to this community, including the American River Parkway and the American River Bicycle Trail in Sacramento. He served on the Board of Directors for The Save the American River Association, the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates and the Sacramento Bike Hikers. He also volunteered weekly at Loaves and Fishes for nearly ten years.

He is to be remembered for his intellectual prowess, commitment to his daughter, dedication to the law, community service, love of the outdoors and his energetic approach to life.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held on Monday, May 25th at 11:00 AM at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento at 2425 Sierra Boulevard.
