Josephine O. Schlahta
Sep 5, 1923 - Nov 3, 2013
Josephine Carrie Ochalek Schlahta, 90, of Elk Grove, California, passed away on November 3, 2013.
She was born to the late Mary and Henry Ochalek on September 5, 1923, in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. Jo graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1941. She married the late James Nowell Schlahta on September 4, 1948, and they spent most of their married life together in San Bernardino, California.
Jo held several part-time jobs over her life including defense factory work during World War II, telephone operator, secretary/office manager, atomic energy base employee, and doll factory worker. Her legacy can be found in the love she gave to her children, grandchildren and son-in-law and daughter-in-law.
In 1999, Jo’s husband Jim passed away just prior to their planned move to join her daughter and son-in-law in northern California. Jo spent her 14 years in the Sacramento area attending yoga classes at the Elk Grove Senior Center and as a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she developed many good friendships. She enjoyed conversation, coffee, reading, and beating all comers in board games and cards.
Jo is survived by three sisters (Estelle DiTollo, Henny Miller and Gale Yacopino) and her two children and their families: Steve, Glenda, Kyle and Katy Schlahta of Richland, Washington, and Kim, Bro, Kaylee, Kristy, and BroBro Corosu of Wilton, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk Grove.
