John Alan McMichael

Jun 24, 1942 - Jan 4, 2017

John Alan McMichael, known for generosity and service passed away January 4, 2017, at the age of 74, after battling Lou Gehrig’s disease, a rare form of ALS. John lived an adventure. He was born June 24, 1942, in Nevada City, California, and graduated from Highlands High School in 1959. He excelled in sports and studies in school and college. He served as a Captain in the US Army 137th Airborne Division while in Saigon. John’s story, which has touched thousands and supported the community in numerous ways, began on his return from Vietnam. He wanted to finish college and go on to become an attorney. His parents, Jack and Catherine McMichael, had passed by the time John was 20, so without the resources for college he went to work for Bob Frink Chevrolet. He already had a passion for cars as he scrimped and purchased a Corvette before joining the Army. Soon he became a partner with Bob Frink and operated 2 dealerships in Oregon. In the middle of this John met his future wife, Val, by selling her a car, of course. Val followed him to Oregon, they married and began their life’s adventure together. In 1991 they bought Bob Frink Chevrolet, Sacramento, CA, renaming the dealership Performance Chevrolet, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary this past November. John continued to serve. He served his employees, his customers and several dozen charities in the communities he loved. These ranged from breast cancer research and survivors, challenging diseases, education, youth sports, the environment and pet rescue. John touched lives through his wit, quiet compassion, and generosity. He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his wife Val, family, employees and many hundreds of friends. There will be a “Celebration of Life” held at THE FALLS CENTER, 240 Conference Center Drive, Roseville, CA on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Placer SPCA Companion Animal Care Center, 150 Corporation Yard Road, Roseville, CA 95678; phone number 916-782-7722.
