Jeanette Elaine Hempleman

Dec 1, 1930 - Mar 30, 2013

Jeanette Elaine (Riley) Hempleman died March 30, 2013 in Sacramento, aged 82 years.  Jean was born December 1, 1930 in Denver Colorado to Julian and Olive Riley.  The family settled in Sacramento where Jean graduated from Sacramento High, and then attended San Jose State College.  Jean married her childhood sweetheart Leroy (Roy) Kenneth Hempleman in 1950, and they had three sons: Steven (Leslie) of Flagstaff AZ, Gary (Lynnette) of Sacramento, and Bruce (Rhonda) of Sacramento.

Jean and Roy raised their sons in Sacramento’s Lemon Hill neighborhood, and Jean worked as an accounting clerk for JC Penney from 1969 until her retirement in 1991. Jean and Roy were devoted and inseparable soulmates, and nurturing parents. In retirement Jean and Roy enjoyed travel around the West, and visits with their children and friends, with Jean carefully scrapbooking their adventures.

In 2006 Jean developed Alzheimer’s disease, which Roy and Jean were able to manage at home until 2009, when Jean entered the Waterleaf at Land Park assisted living facility.  Roy devoted the remainder of his life supporting Jean in this final challenge until his death on January 7, 2013. Jean and Roy were married 62 years.  After Roy’s death, Jean’s health declined due to late-stage Alzheimer’s complications and her loss of Roy.

Jean is survived by her sister Lynne Courtney, sons Steve and Bruce, grandchildren Christine, Kenny, Laura, Julie, and Katie, and several great-grandchildren.  Jean was predeceased by parents Julian and Olive, and son Gary.  The family extends appreciation for the help and compassion of Lynnette Chertorisky, longtime friends and neighbors Jack and Bessie Chesson, the staff at The Waterleaf at Land Park, and Sutter Homecare and Hospice.

Final arrangements were handled by East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary.  No services will be held at Jean’s request, but scattering of Jean and Roy’s ashes together at their favorite place in the Sierras is planned for next summer by close family.

I was sorry to read of Jean’s passing. The kids have lost all 3 wonderful grandparents this year! I loved Jean’s patience and her sense of humor.
