Illogean Bernice Peifer

Dec 11, 1920 - Oct 26, 2018

Illogean “Jean” Bernice Peifer (Wagner) passed away on October 26 at the age of 97 at San Juan Memorial Hospital. Born December 11, 1920, in East Nicholas, California, she was the only child of Henry and Alta Wagner (Kelly). Jean grew up in Chico, California, under the loving care of her grandmother, Ruby “Gram” Kelly.
Jean met a young serviceman at a local dance and he asked to show her home. After a short courtship, they were married in a small ceremony in Chico. Jean travelled with her husband on assignments throughout the US and Europe following WW II, finally settling in Carmichael to raise their family.
Jean was an avid gardener surrounding herself with the beautiful plants she nurtured. She was especially proud of her cactus that bloomed beautifully each year and to her delight became home to a pair of nesting doves.
Jean was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family, who could count on a tin of Molasses Cookies each Christmas.
Shortly after retirement, Jean and her husband discovered the joy and fun of polka dancing. Together they traveled throughout California and US to attend dances making friends along the way. She cherished the friends they made as part of the polka community.
Left to honor Jean and remember her love are her children Dennis Peifer (wife Linda), Joanna Lutman (husband Ron); grandchildren David Conner (wife Gay), Woody Peifer, Lindsay Lutman, Madeline Lutman; great grandchildren Jay Conner (husband Jim) and Toni (husband Max), and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ken Peifer, and grandson, Timothy Peifer.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 17, at 2:00 pm at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento. Burial will follow at the adjoining Sierra Hills Memorial Park. Please join the family in remembering Jean at a reception at St. Francis Community Hall at Sierra Hills Memorial Park.
