Helga Maria Elizabeth Slawson

Dec 20, 1929 - Feb 9, 2017

Our beloved mother Helga was born in Wiesbaden Germany December 20, 1929. She passed peacefully into the arms of Heavenly Father February 9, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer’s. She joins husband Moody, her mother and brother, and two cherished grandchildren who predeceased her. Her early life in Germany was a blend of the hardships of WWII and the fortune of growing up on the Rhine River in Germany’s beautiful Black Forest. After the war she met the handsome young Air Force sergeant from Mississippi who would be the love of her life, our father Moody. They married, came to America, and settled in Sacramento. Together they built a wonderful life for themselves, their three children, and our German Oma Maria. Helga was a hard worker and a good student who spoke four languages. She was a proud naturalized citizen who loved this country. She earned an AA degree in accounting and retired with 25 years’ service from the State of California. She was a lifelong blood donor and a member of the Sunrise Mall walking club. She had a dry wit and a big heart. After retirement she and Moody cared for our grandmother, who also suffered from Alzheimer’s. Helga leaves behind loving daughters Nancy Fay Engellenner Fleming and Maria Wong (Tim), and devoted son Lonnie Dean Slawson (Lynn). She and Moody were blessed with 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. Helga loved opera, anything red, Elvis, roses and camellias, animals, the Oakland A’s, spending time with family, and monthly calls to Germany to catch up with her best friend Hilda. The family is thankful to Eskaton Village Roseville and Sutter Care hospice for their care and compassion during her last year. We are especially grateful to Yvonne Olivarez and the extended Lovelace family for their loving presence in our parent’s lives. A private family service was held Feb. 18. A Celebration of Life and family reunion are planned for this summer. Remembrances can be made to the SPCA, the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choice. Auf Wiedersehen mama, rest easy…you did good!

We will forever love and cherish Dad and Mom Slawson. They were our other parents that loved us as their own. We, along with their children and grandchildren, will always cherish and carry their legacy of faith, hope, and love. The Lovelace Family
