Jan 1, 1970 - Mar 11, 2012
Passed away March 11, 2012 at the age of 92. This fourth generation Californian served as an attorney in Sacramento for over fifty years. He was born in Nevada City, CA, but as his father served in U.S. Congress, he lived six months of every year during childhood in Washington, D.C. After graduating from U.C. Berkley where he had been a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he married his college sweetheart Carol Jo Wheatley in 1942. The marriage lasted six-five years until her death in 2007. During WWII he became a gunnery officer aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid and received a Purple Heart. Following the war, he returned to Hastings School of Law, then began his career as a defense attorney wearing his signature bow tie on a daily basis. Throughout his life he continued to pursue new interests, including a passion for fly fishing and developing his talents as an artist in oils and miniatures. An early computer enthusiast, he continued to the end of his life to be interested in the newest technologies. He was a handyman, an avid reader, a great storyteller and wit. He also took a real interest in noticing and helping others. He was proud and grateful for his 34 years of involvement in AA. He will be deeply missed by many, especially his son and daughter-in-law, Harry L. Englebright II and Eve Somjen of Fairfield, CA; his daughter and son-in-law Ellen and Chris Nichols of Arlington, MA; and his grandchildren, Nathanael and Emily Nichols of Charlottesville, VA, and David and Anne Nichols of Roanoke, VA. A memorial service for Mr. Englebright will be held at Trinity Cathedral, 2820 Capitol Ave, Sacramento, on March 17 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Cancer Society or the SPCA.
