Gordon James Hanson

HANSON, Rev. Gordon, PhD Rev. Gordon James Hanson, aged 93 years, was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Easton, Minnesota, to Jonas and Olga Mykleby Hanson and died April 16, 2015 in Gold River, California. He followed two career paths throughout his life, as a Lutheran pastor and as a college History and Humanities professor. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Iowa with a major in Classical Languages and Literature, he studied Theology at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also pursued theological studies at Mansfield College, Oxford University. Ordained in 1945 he served as the Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Oakland, California and at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sacramento. After his retirement from the ministry, he served as interim pastor at Lutheran Churches in Galt, Paradise and Davis, California. Dr. Hanson received his MA and PhD degrees in History from the University of California in Berkeley, and taught at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Sacramento City College and California State University, Sacramento. A major summertime avocation was overseas travel. He organized and led tour groups throughout the world over a period of forty years. Dr. Hanson was a member of the Roald Amundsen lodge of the Sons of Norway, Nordmanns-Forbundet, the Norwegian American Historical Society, the University of Iowa and the University of California, Berkeley Alumni associations, and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sacramento. He was a past member of Rotary International and the American Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his wife Violet Helland Hanson, and his two sisters, SeDell Brown and Hazel Bergquist. He is survived by his wife Lyla Ferris Hanson, by his children John (Melinda), Rachel and Mary, by his step-children Laurie (Stan), Alan (Debbie), Sharie, Lisa and Ruth (Albert), by 17 grandchildren, by 12 great grandchildren, by three nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be on Friday, April 24th from 4-7pm at Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home, 5401 Folsom Blvd. Sacramento, California. Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, April 25th at 1pm at St. John Lutheran Church, 1701 L St. Sacramento, California. Interment at East Lawn Memorial Park.
