Florence B. Mattos
Nov 11, 1920 - Apr 6, 2011
Nov. 11, 1920 – April 6, 2011
On Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at the age of 90 years, Florence Mattos passed away peacefully in her home in Vallejo, Calif. She was born on Nov. 11, 1920 in Sacramento, Calif., to Fedan and Arthur Sarkisian who fled their home in Armenia to find a new life of freedom in the United States.
Family history says that upon her birth, Arthur went to the window of her hospital room to watch the first Armistice Day parade. Florence is preceded in death by her sisters, Roxie, Rose and Faye; and her brother, Sam Southern.
Florence is survived by her husband, Jesse Mattos, who she met while working in a Vallejo department store and married in 1942. When Jesse joined the Army Air Corps in WWII, she followed him across the country to be with him whenever he could obtain leave. When Jesse was recalled into service during the Korean conflict, she traveled to Okinawa to be at his side.
After their retirement, they traveled the country towing their trailer behind them.
For nearly 69 years, they were an inseparable couple whose marriage served as an example to all who knew them.
She also leaves in sadness her sons, Jim (Karen) of Lincoln, Calif., and Rick (Spider) of Vallejo; three grandchildren, Lisa, Becky and Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Max and Jayne; a host of nieces, nephews, and loving friends; and a lonely Wheel of Fortune slot machine.
Florence was a founding member of the Grandmom’s Club of Vallejo, a member of the Beatrice Portinari Lodge of the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Degree of Pocahontas Improved Order of Redmen, and a member of the Birthday Girls Dinner Club. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Florence’s name.
Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 10, and her funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday, April 11, at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo. A reception will immediately follow at the Sons of Italy Hall, Vallejo.
Burial will be private at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento.
