Sep 24, 1926 - Feb 19, 2015

Evangelos Nicholas Kamilos
KAMILOS, Evangelos Nicholas Evangelos Nicholas Kamilos was born on September 24, 1926 in Lixouri, Greece on the island of Kephalonia. He passed away on February 19, 2015. He was known to all as Angelo. After surviving the massacre and invasion of Mussolini’s and Hitler’s troops into Kephalonia during WWII, Angelo served with honor in the Greek Navy on a mine sweeper. After the great earthquake in 1953, Angelo and his younger brother Andrew immigrated from Kephalonia, Greece to the United States and in 1956 arrived in Sacramento. Angelo’s first job in Sacramento was a busboy at the Del Prado Restaurant on Stockton Boulevard and by 1958 he worked for Purita Sausage Company. Using his savings, he purchased the Sacramento Wood Shaving Company delivering wood chips and shavings to primarily park districts and ranchers throughout the Sacramento Region, Central Valley, and Nevada. Angelo expanded the company from 2 trucks to over 16 trucks which became a familiar sight at local wood processing plants like the Setzer Plant in Downtown Sacramento. Angelo was an early pioneer of recycling by finding a use for a waste product produced by lumber mills. Angelo and his company became well known and trusted in the agricultural community throughout the Sacramento Valley. In 1984, Angelo sold his company and retired. During his retirement he spent half the year in Sacramento and other half in Lixouri. In 2002, Angelo fulfilled his dream of building a stone and cement villa on land held by his family for over 300 years on the Ionian Sea which will become his legacy for generations to come. Angelo has been a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Sacramento since 1956. Angelo was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Maria Kamilos, his brother Andrew and his first cousins Joanne Tingus, E. George Kamilos, and Petro Kamilos. He is survived by his brother Spyridon Kamilos (Athens, Greece), sister Eleni Alexandropoulos (Thessaloniki, Greece), and first cousins Nick Kamilos (Sacramento), Sam Kamilos (Carmichael), Medina Fugate (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and Dennis Kamilos (Folsom), and longtime companion Esther Lilakos as well as many nieces and nephews.
