Elizabeth Jane Buchholz
Mar 14, 1935 - Jan 11, 2018
Elizabeth “Betty” Buchholz was born March 14, 1935 in Foxtrap, Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, Canada to parents James and Lily Porter. She passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018 in Antelope, CA at the age of 82. Betty met her true love, David Buchholz, on a blind date while she was working as a Nurse’s Aide and Dave was stationed at Pepperrell AFB in St John’s, Newfoundland. They were married on February 26, 1954. They had five children: Janet, Steven (Pam), Karen (Don), Edward (Grace) and Larry (Debra) and three grandchildren Natalie (Steven/Pam), Elsa and Karl (Larry/Debra). She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years David Buchholz (1998) and her daughter Janet (1986).
When Dave was honorably discharged, the family moved to Wadena, MN, Dave’s home town. Dave and Betty then moved to Burlingame, CA when Dave got a job with United Airlines in San Francisco. Dave later re-enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Hamilton AFB, San Rafael, CA. During this tour, Dave had two overseas assignments of one year which meant Betty had to be a single mother to three kids. In 1964, Dave was reassigned to McClellan AFB where they were able to purchase their first home. After moving to North Highlands, they began their faithful service to the Lord at Zion Lutheran Church where they served as Sunday school and VBS teachers, on the Evangelism committee, and supported the monthly outreach to the Children’s Receiving Home. Betty was a homemaker while their children were young. When their youngest was in Junior High School, Betty began volunteering as a teacher’s aide for developmentally challenged students at the local school district. She eventually was hired as a part-time teacher’s aide and continued to work until she and Dave retired. Dave and Betty enjoyed camping with their kids and traveling for family reunions. After retirement, they continued traveling, cruising and visiting family. After Dave passed away, Betty continued to travel with friends and served the Lord by helping rebuild homes damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters.
