ALLISON, EDWIN HARRISON BORN MAY 28, 1919 DIED SEPTEMBER 14, 2014

DAD PASSED WAY PEACEFULLY SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 14TH. HE HAD BEEN MAKING HIS WAY TOWARD THAT “100” MARK UNTIL A HIGHER POWER DECIDED HE WAS NEEDED UPSTAIRS-PROBABLY TO GET AN OLD CAR RUNNING. WE ALL THOUGHT HE’D MAKE IT TO 100! WE MADE IT TO LUNCH TO CELEBRATE HIS 95TH BIRTHDAY. HE WAS DOING SO WELL THAT DAY.

DAD WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS PARENTS, EDWIN BANKS ALLISON ORIGINALLY FROM OIL CITY “AND FRANCES CATHERINE HENNESSY ALLISON FROM OIL CITY”, STEP MOTHER, CLARA “NUGIE” ALLISON, OF CRANE, MO., FIRST WIFE LILLIAN JEAN MORRISON ALLISON, DAUGHTER JUDITH JEAN ALLISON AND MANY MANY HENNESSYS, KINNEYS, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS- HE OUTLASTED THEM ALL!

HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS DAUGHTER FROM HIS FIRST WIFE LILLIAN, ME FRANCES REBECCA COLETTI / HARVEY (BOB), GRANDDAUGHTER TAMARA BALLESTEROS AND GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER, LILLY BALLESTEROS. WIFE, NOBU ALLISON, THEIR DAUGHTER, MACHIKO SMITH ( KEVIN ), GRANDCHILDREN ANDREW ALLISON, PRISCILLA SMITH, KEVIN SMITH JR, TYLER HEBERLING, CHRISTENA HEBERLING AND GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER, FIONA ALLISON VEGA.

DAD WAS BORN IN SACRAMENTO IN A HOUSE ON ( P ) STREET, ” IN THE FLATS” AS HE ALWAYS SAID. HE LIVED ALL OF HIS LIFE IN SACRAMENTO WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A COUPLE OF YEARS IN KARLO, CA ( FIND THAT ON THE MAP! ) 5 YEARS IN JAPAN. AND SEVERAL YEARS IN OKINAWA. HE WAS SCHOOLED BY CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, BUT GRADUATED FROM SACRAMENTO HIGH 1939.

HE DID HIS TIME AT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS SCHOOL, HERE IN SACRAMENTO. THAT APPARENTLY WASN’T WORKING OUT. HE WAS SENT TO KARLO, CA ” FOR HIS HEALTH” IN SPITE OF HIS INSISTENT, ISUSPECTED HE WAS SENT TO KARLO TO BE STRAIGHTEN OUT. HIS GRADES WERE NOT LOOKING SO GOOD – EXCEPT IN SHOP, WHERE HE EXCELLED. MY GRANDPA WAS A TUFFY. I SUSPECT GRANDPA THOUGHT THIS WILL BE BETTER FOR HIM. OFF TO KARLO TO LIVE WITH AN ITALIAN FAMILY WHO MANNED THE RAILROAD WATER STOP IN KARLO. OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF ABSOLUTLEY NOWHERE! HIGH ON A VOLCANIC MESA. LIVED IN A BOXCAR. RODE A HORSE TO SCHOOL. LOOKED UP TO THE LOCAL CATTLE RUSTLER. CAME BACK A CHANGED BOY/MAN. HIS FAVORITE/BEST MEMORIES THAT HE SHARED ALL THE TIME.

HE QUIT SCHOOL AND WENT TO WORK AT A VERY EARLY AGE AT THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC (SP) SHOPS PROBABLY FOLLOING HIS DAD’S ROUTE AT WESTERN PACIFIC (WP). HIS BOSS AT THE SP TOLD HIM TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL OR BE FIRED. HE WAS TOLD YOU CAN WORK THE NIGHT SHIFT. HE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL AND WORKED NIGHTS! HE THEN WENT TO WORK AT SACRAMENTO MAINTENANCE DEPOT (McCLELLAN AFB) AND THEN INTO THE NAVY IN 1941. HE RECEIVED HIS GREETINGS AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE SERVICE AT COURTLAND, CA WITH HIS BEST AND CLOSET FRIEND, FRANCIS RIDDELL. HE SERVED PROUDLY AND WAS HONORABLY DISCHARGED IN 1945. AFTER THE NAVY HE WENT BACK TO WORK AT McCLELLAN AFB AND WORKED AT VARIOUS POSITIONS FROM MECHANIC, SCHEDULER TO LIAISON POSITIONS. HE RETIRED 28 MAY 1975 ON HIS 56TH BIRTHDAY AND ON THE DAY HIS DAD DIED. ON THE DAY MY DAD DIED HE HAD HIS U.S. NAVY BLANKET KEEPING HIM COMFORTABLE. IT IS NOW KEEPING HIM WARM AT HIS FINAL RESTING PLACE. HE STILL HAD HIS NAVY HAMMOCK AND WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE. HE WAS A LIFE TIME MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN LEIGON. HE ALSO BELONGED TO THE UNITED STATES NAVAL INSTITUTE, NAVY MEMORIAL, AND WHO KNOWS AT THIS TIME HOW MANY OTHER MILITARY INSTITUTIONS. A VERY, VERY PATRIOTIC MAN.

MY DAD DID AND WAS SO MANY THINGS. HE WAS A TINKERER, ALWAYS HAD A GARAGE (EXCEPT IN JAPAN!) AND THERE WASN’T AN OLD CAR, TRAIN, RADIO, AIRPLANE, THAT HE DIDN’T KNOW THE HISTORY ABOUT OR HAD INTIMATLEY INTERACTED WITH. AT HIS DEATH, HE HAD A NETWORK OF COMRADES ACROSS THE U.S. AND THE WORLD THAT HE KEPT IN CONTACT WITH.

THE CARS I GREW UP WITH OLD CARS IN THE DRIVEWAY, VARIOUS STAGES OF REPAIR IN THE GARAGE, FUTURE CAR PROJECTS STASHED AWAY IN VARIOUS OLD GARAGES OF FRIENDS AND OFF ALLEYS IN SACRAMENTO AND IN THE FOOTHILLS. THERE PROBABLY ISN’T AN ALLEY I HAVEN’T BEEN DOWN IN SACRAMENTO WITH MY DAD. EVERY SATURDAY WAS A PANACAKE BREAKFAST BY MY MOM FOR THOSE WHO WERE ON THE HUNT THAT DAY FOR THE LATEST WHO KNOWS WHAT??? HE OWNED A STUTZ, STANLEY STEAMER, MODEL T, OF COURSE, A MODEL A, RIO, CHEVROLET, PACKARDS, HUPMOBILE, KNOX, 1934 V8 FORD, ETC., ETC. HE HELPED FIND/RESTORE/RUN/SELL MANY MORE FOR FRIENDS AND HIS FATHER EDWIN B. HE HELPED BILL HARRAH FIND AND RESTORE MANY OF THE CARS THAT WERE IN HIS MUSEUM. HIS FATHER WAS SITTING OUT HIS RETIREMENT FROM WESTERN PACIFIC UNTIL MY DAD GOT HIM INTERESTED IN OLD CARS. GRANDPA ALSO HAD A RUN OF DIFFERENT OLD CARS, TOO MANY FOR ME TO REMEMBER. THE MOST MEMORABLE WAS THE 1915 PIERCE ARROW COACH NOW OWNED BY PAT CRAIG IN STOCKTON.THAT CAR WAS BUILT IN PART IN EUROPE FOR THE VANDERBILT’S OF NY.

WHAT A CAR! MY GRANDPA USE TO DRESS UP IN A CHAUFFER OUTFIT AND TAKE MY GIRLFRIENDS AND I TO BORDEN’S FOR ICE CREAM. GRANDPA LET DAD DRIVE SOMETIMES. DAD LOVED THE PIERCE ARROW BUT DID NOT LIKE THE WAY IT DROVE. HE AND 2 OF HIS FRIENDS FOUNDED THE NORTHEREN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER OF HORSELESS CARRIAGE CLUB. HE WAS AN HONORARY LIFE TIME MEMBER. MORE FRIENDS. MORE TRADING. MORE SELLING. AND MANY, MANY, EXCITING ROAD TOURS. I GOT TO GO TO ON SOME OF THEM AND ALWAYS IN COSTUME AS DID EVERYONE ELSE. MY DAD SPECIALIZED IN FINDING/RESEARCHING/AQUIRING CARS AND PARTS FOR HIS CARS AND FOR HIS FRIENDS. MOM WAS THE SELF MADE EXPERT ON COSTUMES AND OUTSTANDING HATS. WHEN DAD GOT GRANDPA ALLISON INTO THE CLUB.  “POP” BECAME THE OLD FASHIONED BUTTON SHOE FINDER/PROVIDER. GRANDMA ARRANGED /SET UP/ RAN THE SOCIAL END. IT WAS AN AMAZING AND FUN TIME. SUCH MEMORIES!

TRAINS. HE KNEW EVERY TRAIN, BY SERIAL NUMBER, BY THEIR SOUND. I HAVE A PHOTO IN THE CAB OF SP# 3003. IN RECENT YEARS HE GAVE ME A BEAUTIFUL SCALE MODEL OF THAT TRAIN. IN MY TRAINING FOR DOCENT AT THE CALIFORNIA RAILROAD MUSEUM I REPORTED TO HIM EVERYDAY OF WHAT I LEARNED AND EXPLORED. I EXCITINGLY TOLD HIM ABOUT THE C.P. HUNNINGTON CAR SET IN A PRIMO SPOT IN THE MUSEUM AND HOW I THOUGHT IT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LITTLE ENGINE. HE LAUGHED. ” I USE TO EAT MY LUNCH IN THAT ENGINE.”

RADIOS. I DONT KNOW ALOT ABOUT THEM. JUST TOOK THEM FOR GRANTED. LOT OF TUBES. LOT OF TRADING OF TUBES. AS THE GOOD OLD STUFF OF OURS DIED. WE RESCUED THE TUBES, ALWAYS FOR MY DAD. I GREW UP ALWAYS LISTENING TO SHORTWAVE IN THE EVENINGS. ALWAYS FINDING ” REAL OLD” RADIOS AT THE DUMP. RESTORE. PLAY. TRADE FOR SOMETHING ELSE. THE DAY HE DIED A HALF OF DOZEN OR MORE RADIOS LAY IN VARIOUS STAGES OF REPAIR. HE WAS STILL TINKERING AT 95!

AIRPLANES. DAD WORKED AT McCLELLAN AFB FOR 30+ YEARS. I ASKED HIM ONCE WHY HE DIDN’T WORK SOMEWHERE WITH CARS, TRAINS OR RADIOS. “I CAN LIKE AIRPLANES TOO.” WORKED ON OR MANAGED ALMOST ALL AND ANY AIRCRAFT THAT CAME THROUGH FOR DEPOT MAINTENANCE.

MY DAD DID SPECIAL THINGS FOR ME MORE THAN I CAN REMEMBER. WHEN I WANTED A GARDEN WITH A POND WHEN I WAS ABOUT 7, HE MADE IT HAPPEN. AMAZINGLY HE OBTAINED A B29 FUEL TANK PRESUMABLY FROM McCLELLAN AFB, GOT IT HOME SOMEHOW, AND MADE A SWIMMING POOL FOR ME. I WAS THE ONLY ONE ON THE BLOCK IN OAK PARK WITH A B29 SWIMMING POOL. I ALSO WORKED AT McCLELLAN AFB. HE KEPT AN EYE ON ME WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE.

HE MADE FAST FRIENDS WITH MY HUSBAND, BOB. THEY WALKED AND TALKED THE SAME LANGUAGE. ON OUR VISITS, THEY’D GET SO ENGAGED THAT THEY FORGOT I WAS THERE!

HE LOVED CATS. WOULD NEVER ADMIT IT THOUGH. HE DID LIKE OUR DOG, CINDY. SHE WAS OK.

HAD A FANTASTIC MEMORY, FORERUNNER OF PHONOGRAPH RECORDS. SHE NEVER KNEW ABOUT THOSE I DID.WE HAD OLD PHONOGRAPH PLAYERS TOO. HELPED ME REMEMBER THINGS. HE TOLD ME HE LAUGHED ABOUT ME AND MY GIRLFRIENDS IN JAPAN HAVING JAPANESE RICE WITH GRAVY AT THE BX FOR 5 CENTS AFTER EVERY MOVIE. HOW DID HE KNOW? DID HE HAVE SPIES? ONE OF MY GIRLFRIENDS, JUST RECENTLY REMEMBERED HIM SHOWING HER THE GROOVED DISCS THAT WERE THE FORERUNNER OF PHONOGRAPH PLAYERS TOO.

HE CLIMED MT FUJI IN ABOUT 1960 AT AGE 41. I HAVE HIS HIKING STAFF THAT HE USED AND SURPRISED HIM WITH IT IN 2009. HE WORKED/LIVED IN VIETNAM DURING THE VIETNAM WAR FOR THE RAM TEAM. HE CROSSED THE PACIFIC MANY, MANY, TIMES TRANSPROTING COCOONED AIRCRAFT. HE WORKED ON MANY UNKNOWN THINGS.

I WILL FOREVER MISS HIM. HE IS NOW IN THE BIG GARAGE IN THE SKY AND I KNOW HE IS HAPPY! I STILL HAVE A THOUSAND OR SO QUESTIONS. I CONTEND WE ALL NEED TO BE BORN WITH A USB PORT SO OUR MEMORIES CAN BE DOWNLOADED WHEN WE DEPART THIS WORLD. FOR MY DAD, THAT USB WOULD BE IN THE GIGABYTE SIZE!
