Obituary – Dena McCarroll
Dena McCarroll, 90, passed away on December 23, 2016. Born Dena Marie Scaglione on October 31, 1926, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Jack McCarroll. Dena is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A warm, colorful woman who loved cooking, Dena maintained her sharp mind, strong will, and engaging sense of humor through her final days.
Matriarch of a large Italian-Irish family, the most important thing to her was family. She grew up in a large, tight-knit Italian immigrant family in Sacramento. She and Jack met at McClatchy High School, fell in love, and got married during World War II. They started a family which endures today.
She had many jobs outside of the home, including at See’s Candy, as a telephone operator, and at the US Army Signal Corps. But the work that meant most to her was where she got to help people, especially children. She worked for several years at Sacramento public schools training developmentally challenged children in food preparation; her good work was recognized by Congressman Robert Matsui. She also volunteered for many years at the Sacramento Children’s Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Dena’s name at a program she admired which helps mothers in crisis, St. John’s Program for Real Change. http://saintjohnsprogram.org/donate/
