Cecile Catherine Freeman

Aug 23, 1923 - Nov 22, 2011

Cecile Catherine Matthews was born on August 23, 1923 in Bay St. Louis Mississippi to the proud parents of Lillian Gilliard and George Matthews. Cecile attended elementary and secondary schools in Bay St. Louis, graduating from St. Rose de Lima Catholic High School where she participated in the school council and was a star player on the women’s basketball team.

Upon graduation she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where she met and married William Ashley and to that union two children were born, Lynette and Gregory.

While in New Orleans, Cecile became the first black field representative for Carnation Company which took her into many homes, hospitals and pageants throughout the city. In that capacity she met and later married Louis Freeman, a young radio personality for WBOK and to that union two sons Lucien and David were born.

In 1959, the family moved to Berkeley, California where Cecile was a homemaker. The time and energy that she dedicated to the lives of her family was her greatest joy; and with their growing up, she decided to take a part-time job with Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. She continued in various assignments within the Kaiser organization for the next 30 years. By the time she retired, Cecile was the manager of the Schedule Maintenance Department which was responsible for the entire doctors’ schedules at Kaiser in Oakland.

Cecile was a very quiet, elegant woman who was an immaculate and meticulous person. She was a very loyal friend and for her the most important thing was her family. She enjoyed being with them, and they with her. Her love of sports remained throughout her life as she could be found at any of the little league games for her sons and grandsons; she served as the team mother from time to time and could also be found at many Oakland A’s games “rooting for the home team”. Cecile also enjoyed a good game of BINGO and her trips to Reno, Tahoe and Las Vegas with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and George and stepfather Lucien Vontoure. She leaves to cherish her memory; daughter Lynette, sons Gregory, Lucien and his wife Michelle, David and his wife Dreena, Grandchildren; Catherine (Mikey), Leslie, Lucien, Jr., Rodrick, Adrienne, Darian, Derek and Dawn. Great grandchildren; Christopher, Lynette and Brittany along with a host of extended family and friends.
