It is very difficult to encapsulate a life in a few words, but I will try. Blanche or “Betty”, as she was known to so many of us, was a most dynamic woman and in some ways way ahead of her time. She was adventurous, a wonderful dancer, an adept chef, and later in life quite the oil painter. She worked in many industries including the airlines (TWA), travelled to many foreign countries including the Soviet Union, Poland, England, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal and also criss-crossed America several times. But first last and foremost she was a great mom.
She made sure I had the best education she and Dad could afford. She was a terrific life coach and encouraged me to go beyond my perceived limits. She dressed with a great sense of style, threw great dinner parties, and brightened any gathering. She had a good sense of humor and would often put me back in my place when she thought I was getting too high and mighty. Mom loved the movies of the 1930s and 40s. During summer vacations when I could stay up late, the two of us would watch Casablanca, Waterloo Bridge, or some such old grainy picture show and share a box of Kleenex between us.
Mom led a good life. There were some rough times along the way but she and Dad always looked on the bright side until things sorted themselves out. That in itself was a valuable lesson. Towards the end of her life she suffered with dementia but even then her spirit was strong and when she did have moments of normalcy it was just like old times. Often I told her that I loved her and I am so glad I never hesitated to do that. I miss her already and must now try to find something to do with the time I spent with her. She taught me much by example and because of her way of looking at life I too have had a good life. Thanks, Mom, I love you, say hi to Dad for me. Until we meet again, Christine
