Betty Mah passed away peacefully at the Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, Alberta at the age of 81 years on July 30, 2015. Betty was born on April 29, 1934 in Canton, China; the daughter of the late Yee Leong Yuen and Mah Yee Pui Fong. She was the second eldest daughter of her 7 siblings. At age 19, Betty married and in 1954 she left Hong Kong to join her husband in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. The family moved to Calgary in 1963. Betty was a devoted wife to her loving husband, Fred Mah of 61 years. When the three children were born she wholeheartedly nurtured them with care and love.
Betty loved reading and had the single-mindedness to teach herself English. She loved to laugh and possessed a beautiful smile that would warm anyone’s heart. When her husband retired, they travelled to a myriad of places. Her most treasured city was Venice, the city of love. Betty was also an accomplished ballroom dancer, where she generously shared her skills that benefitted many. She was a loving grandmother to her 6 grandchildren, Christina, Stephanie, Gregory, Zachary, Christopher and Laura. They all gave her tremendous joy. She cherished every special occasion and celebrated with them in considerable delight. Betty became a Christian, was baptized and became a member of South Gate Alliance. She reveled in reading her Bible and her favorite passage was Psalm 23. She is survived by her beloved husband Fred, her three loving children and their spouses, Garry and Rose, Lynn and the late Percy Kung, Ron and Fay, three brothers, Chester(the late Helen Yee), Jack (May), and John (Maggie) Yee and sister, Marian (Barry) Yip, as well as numerous extended family. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Janet Wong and Grace Yee, and brother, Tom Yee. Betty exemplified courage, determination, and humility throughout her life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Visitations for family and friends will be held Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Memorial service will be held at Fosters Garden Chapel, 3220 4 Street N.W. Calgary, on Friday, August 7, 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a Charity of the Donor’s choice.
