Amy Lee Der

Jan 18, 1928 - Sep 29, 2014

Amy Der passed away on September 29, 2014 at the age of 86 in Sacramento, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born on January 18, 1928 in China to Shee and Fee Lee and was one of seven children raised in Sacramento.  After graduating from Sacramento High, she worked for the State of California.  She met her future husband, who was visiting from out of town, at a social event in Sacramento.  She later married Richard Der and the two relocated to San Francisco. She became a stay-at-home mother to four sons.  As her sons grew older, she returned to the work force at Diamond Properties and then Golden Gate University.  She worked at Golden Gate University?s accounting department for 15 years before retiring in January 1990.  She loved to travel around the world, especially taking cruises to faraway places like Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.  She was an avid dog lover who had many different breeds throughout the years.  There was a Great Dane, a beagle, a German shepherd, a mixed breed, and a miniature dachshund named ?Peanut?.  She was passionate about growing many different kinds of orchids?cymbidiums, phalaenopsis (moth orchids), dendrobiums, oncidiums, lady?s slippers, and cattleyas (corsage types).  When they were blooming, they were a gorgeous sight to see inside her San Francisco home!  Because the orchids could be seen from the street through the living and dining room windows, drivers would toot their horns and give her thumbs up for a job well done. Her home had the perfect lighting for her to tend to them with patience and care.  Her other favorite hobby was knitting.  She knitted all sorts of projects for babies and adults like sweaters, caps, blankets, and stuffed dolls.  She was a wonderful teacher whenever someone wanted to learn the craft.  Another fun thing for her to do was to visit family and friends in Sacramento.  Sadly, as her memory deteriorated in the past 20 years, her hobbies became long forgotten just as well as family members’ names and faces.  In 2008, she and her then surviving husband moved back to Sacramento where she was cared for by Jiehong Li and Arlene Castor at the Der’s home.  The Der family is truly appreciative to the dedicated caregivers for taking such great care of our mother throughout the years.    She is preceded in death by her parents Shee and Fee Lee, beloved husband Richard Der (married over 60 years), brother Ock Lee, and daughter-in-law Jennie Der.  Amy Der is survived by Richard Der, Jr., D.D.S. (Elaine), Gregory Der, Randall (Mary) Der, and Garrick (Annie) Der.  She leaves behind granddaughters, Kathryn (Andrew) Wong, Lauren Der, Stephanie Der, Shelly Der, and great grandsons Chase and Theodore Wong. Amy Der is also survived by her siblings, Wilbert (Lilly) Lee, Robert (Katie) Lee, Virginia (Charles) Tong, George (Sandra) Lee, Dorothy Denham and numerous nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered in our hearts.   Interment will be at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4300 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento on Saturday, October 18, 2014.  Visitation:  noon to 1 p.m., Service at 1 p.m
