Allen L. Beck
March 4, 1926 – September 4, 2014
Allen Beck passed away peacefully on September 4, 2014, full of faith, the love of his family, and sincere gratitude for a long, full and blessed life. He was 88 years old.
Al was born in Worthington, Minnesota on March 4, 1926, along with his twin sister Fern. He was a handsome and enterprising young man who began his first job at age 10, bought his first car at age 11, and grew into a skilled contractor and mechanic by the time he was in high school. He answered the call of service during World War II, enlisting in the Navy as a senior in high school and shipping out the day after graduation in June 1944. He served with the 146th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) in the Pacific, including on Eniwetok Atoll (Marshall Islands) and during and after the Battle of Okinawa (Japan), until he was Honorably Discharge in May 1946.
At home, he met and on June 14, 1952, married the love of his life, Helen Twedt. They were soon blessed with three children. His family meant everything to him and he especially loved taking the kids on vacation, including camping in the Sierras and National Parks, fishing at Lake Hattie in Minnesota, touring Civil War battlegrounds in the south, and regularly visiting San Francisco and the northern California beaches. After an initial career with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company, he joined the Campbell Soup Company where he enjoyed a 35-year career as a purchasing agent. He spent his many, gratifying years in retirement traveling with Helen, tinkering on projects and cars, gardening, playing golf and bridge, volunteering, following the Giants and 49ers, and singing in the church choir. Best of all, he loved spending time with family and made numerous trips to visit his children, grandchildren, and brothers and sisters in the midwest. His gifts of humility, perseverance, generosity, faith and love will be with them forever.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Helen; brother John Beck; sisters Fern Clausen, Betty Ann Burns and Karen Buchman; children David (Rita) Beck, Susan (Tom) Gillespie, and Gretchen (John) Busterud; grandchildren Katie (Gillespie) Perez, Patrick and Michael Gillespie, and Rebecca and Tommy Busterud; and great-grandson Noah Perez. He was predeceased by his dear grandson John Beck and brother Harold Beck. He was dearly grateful for the help of his special caregiver, Jerry Jensen, and the caregivers at Atria El Camino Gardens during the past two years.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 5811 Walnut Avenue, Orangevale, CA 95662. Reception to follow immediately.
