Lewis, Albert E. Jr.

Albert Elmer Lewis Jr, a native Sacramentan, was born July 25, 1925, the son of Albert Elmer Lewis and Theresa Florence Finchley. He was the eldest brother to Merry Lou (Pratt) and Joan Carolyn Lewis.

Mr. Lewis attended American Legion Elementary, Stanford Jr High and graduated from Sacramento High School in 1943. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Army Air Corp where he served in the pacific theater during WWII returning to Sacramento December of 1945. Mr. Lewis went to work as a civil engineer for the State of California Department of Water Resources where he worked for the next 43 years retiring in 1988.
Mr. Lewis married Phyllis Elaine Sherwin in 1947. They had three sons, John Michael, Scott Richard and Roger Martin.
Mr. Lewis married Dorothy Darlene (Dee) Meares in 1959. They had a son, Martin Glenn.
Mr. Lewis was very visible in the Sacramento community throughout much of his life through his participation in various groups, sports and overall selfless spirit of volunteerism. Some memorable moments include: Leading a contingent of Sacramento Boy Scouts by train across the US to the 1950 Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge and playing American Legion baseball and eventually in the Pacific Coast League for the Oakland Oaks prior to the war.
Beginning in the mid 1970s and continuing through the 1980s, Mr. Lewis was a volunteer team manager and umpire in the River Park Little League and a team manager in the East Sacramento Babe Ruth League.
Mr. Lewis was also active in Northern California golf for 50 years as an avid golfer, member and former president of the Sacramento golf club (1969) and member of the NCGA. He continued to support golfing events during his retirement years and participated in several local tournaments and even the US Open at Pebble Beach. In addition to golf, Mr. Lewis remained active in his senior group (SERS) and also served as a former president.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife Darlene, sister Joan, sons Roger and Martin, grandchildren Erika, Keri and Kyle and a great daughter Lily.
Remembrances in memory of Al may be sent to the Sacramento Zoo or SPCA.
