MSgt Donald John Records Obituary
Don was born on the family farm in Eagle Idaho the seventh of ten children of Alfred and Mary Edith Records. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day, Don answered the nation’s call. After he entered the Army he reported to training to become an Air Corps pilot. He and several of his fellow soldiers were hit by an army truck while they were standing in line for breakfast in the dark early morning hours. His severely broken leg and long recovery took away his chance for pilot training and he instead served as an aircraft maintenance technician. After the war he went to Sioux Falls College, where he met Opal Ogle and married her. Then he transferred to the University of Idaho and started a family. He returned to the Air Force in 1957 serving in aircraft maintenance. He was transferred to Mather AFB in 1968 and has been a Rancho Cordova resident ever since. He completed a full career retiring in 1973 as a MSgt. He served around the country and the world including tours in Harmon AFB Newfoundland and a combat tour at Pleiku AB during the Vietnam War. In 1971 he took on the challenge of losing his wife due to complications from heart surgery and taking care of four children still at home and in school. After completing his military service, Don worked in the hardware business to support his family while taking courses at American River College. He continued active service in the church and was rewarded with a second soul mate who lost her pastor husband, Dalton Short, to leukemia. The Lord blessed Don and Mary with almost 40 years together, though the last few years were difficult as Don’s health deteriorated as he struggled with the challenge of Parkinson’s and other disabilities related to his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam and the 1944 army accident. However, we rest in God’s promise that those challenges are past and he is with his Lord now. Isaiah 40:31 tells us that “Those who wait upon the Lord will gain new strength, they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” The challenges of this life may just be a reminder that for those who trust in the Lord that this is not our home.
Don was the last of his generation of Records to pass on to glory as he was predeceased by brothers and sisters Edward, Alfred, Raymond, Margaret, Lucille, Kathryn, David, Lee and Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Mary Lou Records and their children, Ruth and (Rick) Blank, Paul and (Sandra) Records, Steve and (Gloria) Records, Tim and (Bonnie) Records, Velma Records, Linda and (Richard) Jones, Dalton (Fred) and (Jennie) Short. He was also loved and cherished by 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Don will be interred at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery (5810 Midway Rd., Dixon, CA) at 3:00 PM Thursday 2 August. A celebration of life with full military honors will be held at First Baptist Church Rancho Cordova (10720 Coloma Rd., Rancho Cordova, CA ) at 10:00 AM Friday 3 August.
