Obituary for Rhea Ann Brunner

Rhea Dariotis Brunner passed unexpectedly, yet peacefully, on June 19, 2018 surrounded by her family after being diagnosed with cancer just two weeks prior. At the age of 62, Rhea is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Dan; her three children, Matt, Nicholas, and Lauren, their partners, Marga, Sary, and Tom; and her five grandchildren, Tijme, Iban, Viera, Aylana, and Dannie. Her joyful and inclusive presence will be missed not only by them, but by the extensive circles of friends and community members she impacted. Born on November 7, 1955 in Portland, Oregon to her parents Michael and Georgia Dariotis, Rhea grew up with her three brothers, George (Christine), Chris (Gretchen), and Michael and other close members of her large Greek family. The Dariotis family is known for their family-owned restaurant, the Old Spaghetti Factory, where Rhea worked for many years both in the front of the house and as "the best server they ever had." Known as "Ang", short for angel, by her father, Rhea showed early signs of the strong, generous leader she would become; she was a great student and a gifted athlete who excelled on the ski, tennis, and golf teams at Beaverton High School where she graduated in 1974. Rhea moved to California and graduated from UCLA with a Bachelors in Psychology in 1978. During her time there, she was president of her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, paving the way for many family members who would follow in her footsteps as Thetas. She then settled in Sacramento, where her family had also relocated, to pursue a dual Master in Social Work and Public Administration at Sacramento State. She quickly put these degrees to good use by becoming a skilled lobbyist for the California Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, helping to enact laws to expand seatbelt safety and helmet safety among many others. While working at the Capitol, Rhea 'had her eye on' Dan Brunner, whom she met and soon after married in 1982 at Grand Island Mansion. Rhea and Dan traveled the world together, participated in their over 30 year-old book club, collected and appreciated art, skied many mountains (though none as dear to them as Tahoe's), annually boogie boarded the waves of Hawaii, and involved themselves in various local and international philanthropic activities. Most notably and importantly to Rhea, they grew a large, beautiful family together. Rhea was known and loved by many in Sacramento for her immense dedication to and impact on its community. She served on the Crocker Art Museum Board of Directors from 2008-2018, including two years as President. Her leadership also lent itself as a former board member and President of WEAVE, Granite Bay Golf Club, National Charity League, and the Del Paso Foundation Board. In addition, she served proudly on the Sacramento County Grand Jury. This community leadership was complemented by Rhea's athleticism and competitive spirit. She was a passionate and voracious golfer, proven by her three holes-in-one and her numerous golf championships. Rhea was a member and tournament organizer of both Del Paso Country Club and Granite Bay Golf Club. Rhea brought her smile, grace, and welcoming nature to all that she did and all those whom she touched. Opening her home and her heart to celebrations and gatherings was something she did often and with a natural ease. Nothing made Rhea happier than being "all together." She was so much to so many, and she will be missed dearly. All donations in honor of Rhea should be directed to the Crocker Art Museum for "Crocker Next." Services for Rhea will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Sacramento, 600 Alhambra Blvd. on Sunday June 24th at 6pm (Trisagion service) and Monday June 25th at 10am (Funeral service). Luncheon reception will follow at 1pm at Del Paso Country Club, 3333 Marconi Ave. May her memory be eternal.
