Obituary for Melvin "Mel" Shore

Melvin Shore, 94 years old. Born in Montreal, Canada, and raised in Long Island, New York. Following service with the United States Army Air Corps toward the end of WWII, Mel entered the Civil Engineering program at the University of California, Berkeley. Mel was instrumental in the design and construction of the Port of Sacramento. In October of 1963 he was named the port’s second Director and served in that capacity until his retirement in June of 1986.
During his working career, Mr. Shore served on the Boards and Committees of many Trade and Community Services Organizations in California. Mel served as President of both the Golden Gate Ports Association and the Sacramento Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. After retirement, he continued his involvement in the community as a volunteer with Easter Seals, holding woodworking classes for their clients. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Audrey, their daughter Carole Reed and his brother Jerry Shore. He is survived by daughter Linda (Bob) Reed, grandson David (Pamela) Reed, great granddaughter Madeline Reed, son-in-law Lyle Reed and many dear friends.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Access Senior Home Care for providing such excellent care. Services will be private. Contributions in Mel’s name to Sutter Medical Center Foundation or an organization of your choice will be deeply appreciated. Melvin will be laid to rest next to his wife Audrey at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento.
