Obituary for Catherine Nelle Masters

Catherine Nelle "Kay" (Mattingly) Masters passed away at her home in Sacramento on Friday, September 14, 2018, after a valiant struggle with Parkinson's Disease. She was 78 years old.
The fifth of seven children, Kay was born on January 3, 1940, in Fargo, North Dakota. She moved to Lodi, California, with her family as a young girl. She was studying to become a teacher at Sac State University, when she met the love of her life, Bill Masters, and received her "Masters" and "Mrs." on June 25, 1960.
As a full-time mom, Kay was involved in everything from scouting and PTA to the Parkway Estates Parkettes. She became a Teacher's Associate after earning her AA degree with a 4.0 at Cosumnes River College, and many young people benefitted greatly from her love of teaching over the next 25 years.
With a heart as big as the ocean, she raised her three children and became "Mom" and, later, "Grandma" to nearly everybody she knew. Anybody without a family to share it with was welcome in her home and at holiday gatherings.
Kay's artistic talents shone thru every facet of her life. Her home was decorated for every holiday, with great attention to detail and beauty. Her creatively decorated cakes for weddings and other occasions were as tasty to eat as they were beautiful to look at. Kay was a great artist and put that talent into every card, package, poster, tea party and window decoration she made.
After becoming a Christian, Kay became active at the Valley Hi Covenant Church and, later, at the Southgate Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she worshipped and served faithfully. She loved and was loved deeply by her family in both churches.
Kay is survived by her beloved children: Laurie Masters, Valerie Grubbs (Jeff), and Guy Masters (Ruth); grandchildren, Justin Grubbs (Stephanie), Tavia, Garrett, Tara and Amy Grubbs, Caroline and April Masters; and great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Grubbs; sister, Marcia Patrick (John) and brothers Gary (Naomi) and Kent Mattingly. She was preceded by her husband, William Masters, parents Meredith and Gertrude (Pulscher) Mattingly, brothers Gene, Phil and Rick Mattingly, and grandson Benjamin Masters. We will all miss her more than she will ever know.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, September 30th, at the Southgate Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2299 Meadowview Road, Sacramento, followed by a reception with family and friends. Kay will be buried with Bill at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
