Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our father, Francis Donald Sterba. Born February 10, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, Francis spent his early years on a farm in Elgin, Illinois before moving with his family to Sacramento, California in 1950. Frank was a proud Sacramento Dragon, graduating from Sacramento High School in 1954. He joined the United States Army in 1955 and spent two years serving in Europe, primarily Germany, before returning to the states in 1957 and finding work in the San Francisco area. In March of 1958, on a blind date, he met his beloved wife, Margaret, an RN from upstate New York, while she was on holiday in California. They were engaged to be married in three weeks' time, and married on November 29, 1958. They remained married for 50 years, until Margaret's death in 2008. They settled in Sacramento and welcomed the first of their four children in January 1960. Frank received a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Sacramento State University in 1975, and worked for the state of California for over 30 years before retiring in 1998. Frank was active in the PTA, Little League, and CSUS Alumni Association, as well as a big supporter of the Sacramento Theatre Company. In addition to his wife, Frank is predeceased by his parents, Francis and Sophie Sterba, his sister Barbara Wood and brother Thomas Sterba. He is survived by his children Susan Valentine, (Richard), John Sterba, (Lynn), James Sterba, (Patricia), and Juanita Sterba. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Brittany Alexis, James Daniel, Olivia Taylor, Megan Elizabeth and Gabrielle Sophia. Frank also leaves behind his sister Juanita Hughes (Robert) of Washington, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Frank will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and superior intelligence, as well as his love of travel, ice cream and baseball, a legacy he left with all of his children and grandchildren.
