Obituary

In memory of Kris Silva
October 22, 1959 – August 23, 2016
Devoted son, brother, friend and neighbor, Kris touched everyone he knew in a warm, witty and positive manner. Kris grew up in Corona del Mar and always enjoyed the outdoors and water through many activities and athletic interests. Athletic and competitive from a young age, he participated in age group swimming and went on to swim, play water polo and volleyball on a varsity level at Corona del Mar High School. Kris also paddled with the Off Shore Canoe Club in Newport Beach. His early favorite pastimes included sailing, surfing and playing beach volleyball with his friends, driving his 1966 VW bus, and listening to his favorite tunes by James Taylor and contemporaries. Kris later became an avid golfer, relishing his time on the course; twice making a hole-in-one were among his proudest achievements on the links. Other hobbies included fishing, boating, camping, gardening, cooking and caring for his pets. He loved the holidays, decorating, and any excuse to gather and celebrate life with friends and family.
Kris developed an extremely strong and loyal work ethic working over 40 years in the restaurant industry. He earned the personal respect and admiration from many employees he trained and directed as general manager, as well as thousands of customers he served through his dedication, support and sincere interest on a personal and professional. Ever amiable and openhearted, Kris had a special way of reaching out to people and making lasting connections. He was a friend for life, genuine and sincere with all whom he came into contact.
A natural optimist, even throughout many trials and tribulations, Kris never ceased looking on the bright side and always highlighted the positive with a sense of humor and humility. In January of this 2016, he sustained a severe work-related burn injury that took six months of difficult rehab to recover. Finally feeling fit enough, he went back out on the golf course again and began making other plans for personal enjoyment. Unbeknownst to him at the time, that would be his last round. In the last week of June, Kris was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He passed away in August surrounded by family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Jill Silva, of Washington, DC, father and his wife, John and Alberta Silva, of Corona del Mar, sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces, Elizabeth, David, Devon and Lauren Trepp of Newport News, VA. With cherished memories of the good times shared with him, he will always be loved and missed.
Although no service was planned, he will be remembered with a Celebration of Life gathering among his cherished childhood friends. A portion of his cremated remains have been buried at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento, and a portion will be scattered off shore in Newport Beach, as well as in his favorite fishing spots in Northern California and in Cong, County Mayo, Ireland.
