Obituary

FONG, Lily
April 28, 1926 – April 15, 2015

It is with deep sorrow to announce the passing of Mrs. Lily Fong (Lee Lai Kane). She was embraced peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord on April 15, 2015 surrounded by her devoted children Wanda, Anna, Peggy, Art, Samuel, Jerry, Franklin and family at her side. Born in Canton, China in the village of Scheong Long Chern on April 28, 1926 and received a formal education at the Toy Shan Girl's Normal School in Kwong Doong. Married in 1947 to loving husband and businessman Walter S. Fong who later founded the supermarket chain Farmers Markets in Northern California. A lifelong resident of Sacramento for 65 years, Lily led a quiet life devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a hard working mother who raised seven children, establishing a wonderful home life for her family, as her husband worked long hours to build a successful business for his wife and family. Lily was a beautiful asset to her husband in civic and social functions in the Chinese and business communities throughout their marriage. With ample practice in cooking for her large family, she was known as an excellent cook in Chinese cuisine with a passion and curiosity for trying new and interesting recipes all her life. Lily had many dear friends who will miss her kindness and spirited nature. Food was her passion and she made it her lifelong habit to shower her friends with packages of prepared meals, goodies and provisions, especially to those who were home bound. Her family has lost their wise and regal Matriarch who was known as a no nonsense disciplinarian with an unexpected sense of humor and a heart of gold. Even at 88 years old, Lily continued to keep up with the latest fashions and watch the popular TV and cable shows endearing her to her family, especially her grandchildren. She led an unwavering life of example for her children and grandchildren to love and respect family and to do no harm to others. Her simple example has engendered an unmatched love and respect for her by her family that cannot be measured in words, but only in knowing her. Lily is preceded in death by husband Walter S. Fong; brother, Johnson Kwong and granddaughter, Kendall Laurel Lui. She is survived by her children Wanda Fong Jerrit (Gary), Anna Fong-Morgan (Bob), Peggy Fong (Stan Wong), Art Fong, Samuel Fong (Alice), Jerry Fong and Franklin Fong (Cynthia). Also survived by her brother Lyman Lee (Susan), sister Betsy Fong (Johnny) and sister-in-law Jane Kwong and many nieces and nephews. She was so proud of her adoring grandchildren Jeremy, Wynn, Samantha, Tracie (Daniel), Jordan (James), Jason, Danielle (Nick), Jessica (Francois), Lisette (Michael), Timbrely, Jared, Hannah, Kathryn, Elaine, Christopher and one sweet great granddaughter, Madeleine. Memorial service to be held at 2:00PM on Tuesday April 21, 2015 at East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park located at 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, CA 95841.
