The family moved to San Francisco when O.B. was three years old. He graduated from Balboa High School, San Francisco, in 1965. In 1968 he enlisted and served in the Army for three years during the Vietnam War era.
O.B. was a life long learner. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University in 1980; a Masters Degree in Psychology from California State University, Sacramento, in 1995; and a Doctorate degree in Psychology from the Professional School of Psychology, Sacramento, in 2008.
In 1988, O.B. married the love of his life, Sharon Maynard, in Sacramento. The couple settled nearby in Antelope where O.B. worked as an Emergency Medical Technician, as a Paralegal, as an Analyst for the State of California, and as a clinical Psychologist. He also volunteered at both the UC Davis Medical Center and the Sacramento Suicide Prevention Center.
For most of his adult life, O.B. was a Zen Buddhist; his daily meditation was his refuge and he cherished his relationships with the Sangha. He practiced at the San Francisco Zen Center, the Diamond Sangha in Hawaii, and the Ring-a-Bone Zendo in North San Juan, CA.
O.B. loved sports and camping and hiking with family and friends. He played basketball in high school and was the yell leader for the Balboa High football team. He ran marathons and hiked Mount Shasta several times. He was especially fond of tennis and played on several teams in the Sacramento area. Family was very important to O.B. He was a caring father and grandfather and cherished family reunions in Oregon and visiting his wife’s family in South Dakota.
Preceding O.B. in death was his father, O.B. Ray Junior; his sister, Jo Ann Ray; and his brother-in-law, Fred Kimberling.
