Obituary for Ruby M. Fong

On November 14, 2017, Ruby Maria Fong, 88, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family. She was born in Honolulu, the youngest of four children. Her father immigrated to Hawaii from China via Mexico. Her mother was a second-generation Chinese-Hawaiian. Ruby attended Sacred Heart Academy in Oahu, graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, and obtained a post-graduate Credential in Pre-School Primary Education at Smith College, Northampton, MA. Ruby met Dr. William Fong while he served in the Air Force in New York. They married in 1954, moved back to Sacramento, and raised eight children. An accomplished pianist, Ruby loved music and insisted that her children take piano lessons and play a stringed instrument. She became an expert in fine violins and proper violin technique despite not playing violin herself. She was renowned for putting on tire chains and driving her eight children through snowstorms to Lake Tahoe, and only once left a child behind at a rest stop. After most of her children left home, Ruby studied Mandarin at Sacramento City College and the Beijing Language Institute. She joined the US-China People's Friendship Association, serving on its board of directors for over 20 years. Ruby was a strong advocate for promoting friendly relations with China. As USCPFA's Tour Director, she organized and promoted cultural tours and language exchange programs. Ruby is preceded in death by her husband, William Y. Fong, her parents Yun Sau and Kam Ngo Yee, and her brothers Alfred and Daniel Yee. Ruby is survived by her sister Lucy Fuketome, and her children Curtis ((Rita) (Erin and Gordon)), Mira Nakano ((Russell) (Lisa (Andrew Braum) and Gail (Jonathan Thomas)), Douglas ((Paula) (Dana and Linnea)), Barron ((Christine) (Anthony and Angela)), Randy ((Lisa) (Sarah, David and Sam)), James ((Liz) (Valerie and Jamie)), Joseph ((Denise) (Makenzie and William)), and Ted ((Marielle) (Maxwell, Nina, Mario, Leland and Jennifer)). She leaves her 20 grandchildren with her simple advice for healthy living: "Drink your water!" and "Soda bad!!!" Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 21st from 5:30PM to 7:30PM at George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers at 2691 Riverside Blvd. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Spirit Church on Wednesday, Nov. 22nd at 11:00AM. Remembrances can be made to ACC Senior Services or Chinese Community Church.
