George Hernandez

July 17, 1941 — May 14, 2018

George Hernandez, born in Merced, California on July 17, 1941, passed away in his Sacramento home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Dovie, and his adoring children, Gina Madrigal (Adam), Virginia Gray, and Georgette Saavedra. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, and 8 ½ greatgrandchildren. Growing up, he was a farmworker in the San Joaquin County and throughout the Central Valley. He attended Edison HS in Stockton, CA and was on the Swim Team. He proudly enlisted in the USMC. During his service, he married his “Lovely Dovie.” He was a trumpet player a Drum Bugle Corp. He enrolled in Modest Jr. College, earning an Associate’s Degree, and then transferred to CSU Stanislaus, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Sociology. He was a rehabilitation counselor in Ventura, CA. The family moved to Sacramento, CA, to pursue his State service career, where he was successfully, retiring after 30 years. In Sacramento, he & his wife proudly purchased a home in Valley Hi, and settled in the community to raise their 3 girls. George believed in getting involved in the community. He was a musician with Recuerdos de Oro, involved in the American GI Form, a State of CA Café member, a karate student, a Sacramento Arts Council member, Mariachi, and one of the co-founders of Ballet Folklorico Nube de Oro and Ballet Folklorico Aztlan. George enjoyed life. He loved driving his wife to the local casinos, traveling, camping, hunting, and took pride in maintaining his home, & collecting eclectic treasures. He loved fishing & his friends. He enjoyed helping and mentoring his children, grandchildren and friends. He was a supporter of higher education, especially with his family and in the Latino community.
